  Opposition Leader Douglas Tomuriesa said he is disappointed and embarrassed over the way His Holiness Pope Francis was treated by Prime Minister James Marape over the last three-days during the Papal visit, and the lack of courtesy and respect shown by the Prime Minister. He said the Prime Minister continuously declares PNG as a ‘Christian country’ and prides himself on being a religious individual but he was surprised when the Pope was continuously snubbed by the PM over the weekend since the Pope’s arrival on Friday. “The Pope is the head of the Catholic church, the largest Christian church in the world and he is also a head of state. “PNG not only being a Christian country, but a country that prides itself as a ‘friend to all, enemy to none’, the PM should be according the Pope with the highest level of respect,” Tomuriesa said. US$9bil P’nyang deal set

  February 18, 2022 The National Main Stories PRIME Minister James Marape says a deal on the country’s third liquid natural gas (LNG) project is expected to be signed next week. He said cabinet had cleared the P’nyang Gas Agreement, which now awaits signing between the State and developer – ExxonMobil. Marape told  The National  yesterday that the US$9 billion (K30bil) P’nyang standalone project would be integrated with the multi-billion dollar PNG LNG project. The P’nyang agreement closely follows another multi-billion agreement made two weeks ago to reopen the Porgera gold mine. The US$5.4 billion (K18.5 billion) Wafi Golpu project is expected to be announced next week, Marape said. On a PNG LNG project related matter, Marape mentioned Santos Ltd’s positive indications of additional equity, based on his request to Santos, if they offload equity in PNG LNG as a result of their acquisition of Oil Search assets.   February 1, 2022 Sports FORMER North Queensland Cowboys, Penrith Panthers, Cronulla Sharks, Brisbane Broncos and Leeds Rhinos hooker James Segeyaro has been linked with a move to the Manly Sea Eagles. The 154-game National Rugby League (NRL) veteran, who had 10 games alongside that in the English Super League during a career which stretched between 2011 and 2019, said on the weekend that he had been offered a deal. Papua New Guinea international Segeyaro’s last stint in first-grade came to an end with the Broncos in September, 2019, after a drink driving charge saw Brisbane end his contract. He was then barred from playing rugby league after he was handed a 20-month suspension for being found to have the drug ligandrol in his system. Given this ban was backdated, clubs have been able to offer the rake a deal since June 2 of last year. However, none had previously been forthcoming until now.   February 1, 2022 The National Main Stories THE Electoral Commission is way ahead with the preparations for the 2022 general election, says Electoral Commissioner Simon Sinai. “All the work plans are done and ready for implementation,” he said. “We have plans for the enrolment of voters, election materials, logistics, ballot papers and ballot boxes.” The commission is now enrolling those not in the common roll, especially the first-time voters. “We are into checking, verifying and confirming each and every voter in each of the council ward,” Sinai said. “Work on electoral roll verification and updating is in progress in the 22 provinces, 331 local governments and 6375 council wards.” He urged every citizen to make sure they are enrolled in their council ward. “We are actually targeting young voters who would be turning 18 year by April when the election writs are issued,” Sinai said. “It is a democratic right for each citizen to vote in an election. “So to take part in the voting ...

Three killed in Madang

  February 1, 2022 Main Stories By SYLVESTER WEMURU THREE teachers in Madang have been killed by violent criminals in the space of a week, according to police. Madang provincial police commander acting Supt Mazuc Rubiang said students started school this week and the teachers had resumed their duties last week. But the families, students and some teachers in the province were mourning the death of the three men. Supt Rubiang said two deceased teachers were identified by their relatives. Their bodies are at the Modilon Hospital morgue while one is still missing at sea. He said the teacher missing at sea had been among a group of seven passengers on a boat who went missing after being attacked by the armed criminals at Tabali Point on Jan 13 while on their way to Rai Coast from Madang town. The teacher was identified as Mai Nafa-Tipang, a primary school teacher from Rai Coast’s Nayudo local level government. By MIRIAM ZARRIGA in Vanimo POLICE have busted an illegal cockfighting operation run by expatriates in the mountains of Vanimo-Green’s Sumomini in West Sepik on Sunday afternoon. About 30 men from Indonesia, Malaysia and China, and a woman from Indonesia, had been taking bets on the cockfights were arrested. Police Commissioner David Manning was informed of the bust by policemen in Vanimo on Sunday afternoon after they returned from the mountains.
