Opposition Leader Douglas Tomuriesa said he is disappointed and embarrassed over the way His Holiness Pope Francis was treated by Prime Minister James Marape over the last three-days during the Papal visit, and the lack of courtesy and respect shown by the Prime Minister. He said the Prime Minister continuously declares PNG as a ‘Christian country’ and prides himself on being a religious individual but he was surprised when the Pope was continuously snubbed by the PM over the weekend since the Pope’s arrival on Friday. “The Pope is the head of the Catholic church, the largest Christian church in the world and he is also a head of state. “PNG not only being a Christian country, but a country that prides itself as a ‘friend to all, enemy to none’, the PM should be according the Pope with the highest level of respect,” Tomuriesa said. The Opposition Leader pointed out that on Friday, the Prime Minister did not welcome the Pope at the airport, a tradition he had accorded to many other wo

NEW Leigh signing Nene Macdonald shone on his Centurions debut as he scored a hat-trick in the hosts’ 50-4 win over fellow Papua New Guinean Dion Aiye’s Whitehaven in round one of England’s second-tier rugby league competition on Sunday (local time).
Leigh were keen to maintain their impressive record against Whitehaven, having won the previous 12 meetings stretching back to 2009.
The last time Whitehaven had beaten Leigh at home was on final day at Hilton Park in 2008.
Whitehaven had lost their warm-up games against Workington and Swinton while Leigh lost at St Helens the previous week.
After some early pressure on the Whitehaven line seven minutes in, PNG international Macdonald scored the first try of the new season after some silky work by Ben Reynolds.
Unfortunately, Reynolds’ conversion was narrowly wide of the target.
Fifteen minutes, Leigh’s Kieran Dixon crashed over in the corner after a sweeping move across the line and Reynolds found the target with his touchline conversion for a 10-0 lead.
Macdonald almost scored again 21 minutes in, but he failed to catch the ball following another good flowing move.
Leigh went into the break with a 28-0 lead, thanks to a converted try each to Caleb Aekins, Keanan Brand and Tom Nisbet.
Straight after the restart, Leigh’s Tom Amone made a huge break through the middle before he was halted.
From the play-the-ball, Macdonald collected a lofted cut-out pass and went in for his second try, but Reynolds was unable to add the extras.
In 46th minute, former Sydney Rooster, Gold Coast Titan, St George Illawarra Dragon and North Queensland Cowboy Macdonald completed his hat-trick with an incredible burst of speed through the middle and shrugging off a tackler.
Reynolds made sure of the conversion to push Leigh further out to a 38-0 lead.
Whitehaven got on the scoreboard when Evans crossed over for an unconverted try 51 minutes in to trail 4-38.
However, converted tries to Mark Ioane and Nisbet ensured a comfortable victory for the early Betfred Championship frontrunners. – leighrugbyleague
