Opposition Leader Douglas Tomuriesa said he is disappointed and embarrassed over the way His Holiness Pope Francis was treated by Prime Minister James Marape over the last three-days during the Papal visit, and the lack of courtesy and respect shown by the Prime Minister. He said the Prime Minister continuously declares PNG as a ‘Christian country’ and prides himself on being a religious individual but he was surprised when the Pope was continuously snubbed by the PM over the weekend since the Pope’s arrival on Friday. “The Pope is the head of the Catholic church, the largest Christian church in the world and he is also a head of state. “PNG not only being a Christian country, but a country that prides itself as a ‘friend to all, enemy to none’, the PM should be according the Pope with the highest level of respect,” Tomuriesa said. THREE teachers in Madang have been killed by violent criminals in the space of a week, according to police.
Madang provincial police commander acting Supt Mazuc Rubiang said students started school this week and the teachers had resumed their duties last week. But the families, students and some teachers in the province were mourning the death of the three men.
Supt Rubiang said two deceased teachers were identified by their relatives.
Their bodies are at the Modilon Hospital morgue while one is still missing at sea.
He said the teacher missing at sea had been among a group of seven passengers on a boat who went missing after being attacked by the armed criminals at Tabali Point on Jan 13 while on their way to Rai Coast from Madang town.
The teacher was identified as Mai Nafa-Tipang, a primary school teacher from Rai Coast’s Nayudo local level government.
Supt Rubiang said the elementary school teacher murdered at Jopto on Jan 14 taught at Sigia Elementary in Transgogol.
He was identified as Peter Kabazaum, 46, of mixed Central and Madang parentage.
Kabazaum was beheaded by criminals while on his way to his village on a public vehicle.
The matter was reported to police after PNG Defence Force soldiers in the area helped locals transport the body to Jomba police station.
The head was allegedly taken away by the killers.
Supt Rubiang said police were investigating the matter and several suspects had surrendered to the police on Saturday and were in custody.
The third teacher killed was identified as Camilus Lovon, of mixed East New Britain and Madang parentage, whose body was found at the Mis market by security guards on Saturday morning.
Lovon taught at Komba Primary School.
“I am sad that some people in Madang are not protecting the people who change their province but turn violent by attacking them,” Supt Rubiang said.
“We should work together with them and develop our villages.
“Police are investigating all these murder cases.”
