He said the Prime Minister continuously declares PNG as a ‘Christian country’ and prides himself on being a religious individual but he was surprised when the Pope was continuously snubbed by the PM over the weekend since the Pope’s arrival on Friday. “The Pope is the head of the Catholic church, the largest Christian church in the world and he is also a head of state. “PNG not only being a Christian country, but a country that prides itself as a ‘friend to all, enemy to none’, the PM should be according the Pope with the highest level of respect,” Tomuriesa said. THE Electoral Commission is way ahead with the preparations for the 2022 general election, says Electoral Commissioner Simon Sinai.
“All the work plans are done and ready for implementation,” he said.
“We have plans for the enrolment of voters, election materials, logistics, ballot papers and ballot boxes.”
The commission is now enrolling those not in the common roll, especially the first-time voters.
“We are into checking, verifying and confirming each and every voter in each of the council ward,” Sinai said.
“Work on electoral roll verification and updating is in progress in the 22 provinces, 331 local governments and 6375 council wards.”
He urged every citizen to make sure they are enrolled in their council ward.
“We are actually targeting young voters who would be turning 18 year by April when the election writs are issued,” Sinai said.
“It is a democratic right for each citizen to vote in an election.
“So to take part in the voting process and electing a leader, you must first enrol yourself in to the electoral roll (voter registration) kept by Electoral Commission to be used in every election.”
Sinai said the commission was maintaining the 2017 electoral roll by taking copies to the ward areas and verifying the names. The electoral roll work is expected to be completed this month.
Sinai thanked the public servants and everyone helping in the registration process.
“I appeal to ward agents holding back enrolment books to return (them) as soon as possible,” he said.
“You are going to get paid.
“We are processing your allowances.”
