Douglas Tomuriesa, Pope Francis and James Marape

Opposition Leader Douglas Tomuriesa said he is disappointed and embarrassed over the way His Holiness Pope Francis was treated by Prime Minister James Marape over the last three-days during the Papal visit, and the lack of courtesy and respect shown by the Prime Minister. He said the Prime Minister continuously declares PNG as a ‘Christian country’ and prides himself on being a religious individual but he was surprised when the Pope was continuously snubbed by the PM over the weekend since the Pope’s arrival on Friday. “The Pope is the head of the Catholic church, the largest Christian church in the world and he is also a head of state. “PNG not only being a Christian country, but a country that prides itself as a ‘friend to all, enemy to none’, the PM should be according the Pope with the highest level of respect,” Tomuriesa said. The Opposition Leader pointed out that on Friday, the Prime Minister did not welcome the Pope at the airport, a tradition he had accorded to many other wo

Police alleged that on April 23, 2019, Supa escaped from the Port Moresby General Hospital when he was taken from Bomana to get medical treatment. Office needs more lawyers

March 16, 2022 Main Stories By CLARISSA MOI THE Public Prosecutor’s Office handled more than 500 cases nationwide last year, public solicitor Leslie Mamu says. “We are in dire need of more lawyers to relieve the load of cases the current lawyers in office are handling. “They are inundated with too many files,” he added. He said the office was mindful of the medical-related consequences caused by work pressure. “They are over-burdened with so many cases, so we are asking for more manpower,” he added. Mamu said the highlight of the office’s annual report that was presented to Governor-General Sir Bob Dadae yesterday was the proposal to fill 67 positions secured in 2019. He noted that the report covered office activities and functions, and its recommendation to the Government for improvement of its services. “We made a submission to the Government through the Personnel Management Department (in 2019). “They approved the 67 positions but to date, the Government had not given us funding f

Party leader and Prime Minister James Marape confirmed that Mori, the Chuave MP, had written to him earlier this week informing him of his decision to resign. Marape said Mori would be released once the process was completed. “We are a pillar of democracy as a political party and we respect all leaders’ freedom of association and if the MP feels right to leave Pangu Pati, we aren’t going to stop him,” Marape said. Mori is expected to run under his own Country Party banner in the General Election. “It is good that he moves as I finalise a trusted team to take to the elections seeking people’s mandate not just for 2022 but for the next generation of leadership that is poised to take the country into the future,” he said. He also urged party members and affiliates to pause all activities in respect of William Samb, a senior Pangu party member and Commerce and

March 16, 2022 Main Stories By LULU MAGINDE NATIONAL Capital District (NCD) Governor Powes Parkop says eight of the 50 Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) stage buses handed over to the NCD Commission (NCDC) have been in use as school buses. “The rest of the buses were supposed to have been handed over to the NCDC to provide reliable, efficient and safe public transport. “However, that never happened due to post-Apec changes in the Government,” he added. Parkop was responding to queries why the stage buses had been lying idle since 2018 when the vehicles could have been put to productive use. He said the eight buses provided support services to De La Salle, Koiari Park Secondary and Marianville as among the schools benefitting from the services. Parkop said: “An agreement was reached with the bus manufacturer in China to keep supplying spare parts and help train our mechanics and drivers under the impression that the buses would go to NCDC. “Now, the recipients are unable to mai

March 16, 2022 Main Stories A POLICEMAN who allegedly shot another man last month in Port Moresby appeared in the Waigani Committal Court yesterday charged with attempted murder. Magistrate Paul Nii yesterday read the charge to Jacob Michael, 51, from Taupota village in Alotau, Milne Bay, and extended his bail of K1,000 until his next appearance on April 26. Police alleged that on Feb 12 between 6pm and 6.10pm, Michael was at the Kukupi Block, 9-Mile, attending to a complaint in which there was an argument between the families of Emmanuel Pou and Agartha Morea. It was alleged that Michael was driving a white and red striped, five-door Land Cruiser police vehicle. In the process of arresting Pou, Michael was allegedly surrounded by Pou’s family who tried to stop him from executing his duty. As a result, Michael drew his weapon (Amsco 9mm) and fired a shot to the ground which dispersed the crowd. Michael then moved towards the vehicle and got on the driver’s side. As he tried to drive

The shooting occurred at a dinner in a restaurant in Waigani on Friday while Robert Jerry, 38, was dining with the MP and others at about 8pm. Jerry was shot dead on the spot. National Capital District (NCD) police said a post-mortem would be conducted as soon as the forensic doctor returned from the Highlands. A crime scene reconstruction was done with a forensic unit staff collecting information to try to determine what had happened, with suggestions that the shooting was unintentional. The NCD CID (Criminal Investigation Division) had been given until today to ensure the case files were ready for the MP, who police said was present at the crime scene, to be invited for questioning. Police said the MP’s Glock 19 pistol was discharged in the restaurant that night and was handed to the police later by him. N
