He said the Prime Minister continuously declares PNG as a ‘Christian country’ and prides himself on being a religious individual but he was surprised when the Pope was continuously snubbed by the PM over the weekend since the Pope’s arrival on Friday. “The Pope is the head of the Catholic church, the largest Christian church in the world and he is also a head of state. “PNG not only being a Christian country, but a country that prides itself as a ‘friend to all, enemy to none’, the PM should be according the Pope with the highest level of respect,” Tomuriesa said. THE Public Prosecutor’s Office handled more than 500 cases nationwide last year, public solicitor Leslie Mamu says.
“We are in dire need of more lawyers to relieve the load of cases the current lawyers in office are handling.
“They are inundated with too many files,” he added.
He said the office was mindful of the medical-related consequences caused by work pressure.
“They are over-burdened with so many cases, so we are asking for more manpower,” he added.
Mamu said the highlight of the office’s annual report that was presented to Governor-General Sir Bob Dadae yesterday was the proposal to fill 67 positions secured in 2019.
He noted that the report covered office activities and functions, and its recommendation to the Government for improvement of its services.
“We made a submission to the Government through the Personnel Management Department (in 2019).
“They approved the 67 positions but to date, the Government had not given us funding for those positions.
“We are present in almost all the provinces except Western and Hela.
Some provinces have one lawyer, some have two, while others have three.
“We like to equalise the numbers across the provinces to provide equal treatment and help to all,” he added.
Annual reports were also presented to the Governor-General to be forwarded to the Parliament Speaker.
