THREE prisoners who allegedly escaped from the Bomana prison and recaptured on different dates were read their charge of escaping lawful custody at the Waigani Committal Court yesterday.
Magistrate Paul Nii read the charge separately to Paul Supa, 44, of Moinomo village in Chuave, Chimbu, Kirikirigau Harisu, 45, of Karama village in Malalaua, Gulf, and Ronny Saguba, 44, of Mabudawan village in South Fly, Western, as they had appeared separately in court.
Nii then upheld police prosecutor Senior Sergeant Chris Iga’s submission to adjourn the case until April 27 to allow more time for the police to file their hand up brief.
Supa, Harisu and Saguba were serving their terms in Bomana.
Supa was convicted for rape and jailed 18 years in 2017.
Police alleged that on April 23, 2019, Supa escaped from the Port Moresby General Hospital when he was taken from Bomana to get medical treatment.
He had been on the run for two years and seven months and was recaptured on Nov 6, 2021, at 6-Mile Dump Settlement.
Harisu had allegedly escaped from the Bomana prison on Jan 5, 2015, when he was allowed to collect greens from his garden outside the compound.
The warders on duty found out about Harisu’s escape during roll call in the afternoon.
Harisu was on the run for more than five years and was caught by community members in Karama village and taken to the Kerema Police Station on March 2, 2020.
He was arrested and sent back to Bomana.
Police alleged that on Oct 15, 2016, the Bomana officers escorted Saguba to the Port Moresby General Hospital to get medical treatment because he was very sick.
Saguba allegedly escaped after getting treatment.
He was also on the run for almost five years and was caught on Oct 7, 2021, at 2-Mile Hill by a joint police, Correctional Service and task force team.
