THE passing of Commerce and Industry Minister and Goilala MP William Samb has shocked his family, friends and MPs who were told of his passing at about noon in the United Arab Emirates.
Prime Minister James Marape was informed of the death by Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates Joshua Kalinoe saying that Samb died on Thursday afternoon at a hospital in Dubai.
Papua New Guinea received the news at about 10pm Thursday.
“Samb was on official duties at the trade exposition in Dubai promoting Papua New Guinea as an investment destination in his capacity as the Commerce and Industry Minister,” Marape said.
“Samb was a true, zealous defender of our country and our rights as far as taking back more, in our natural resources is concerned.
“He was one of the stalwarts of Loloata, one of the members in the group of politicians in Loloata camp, never succumbing to inducements, especially short-term inducements that are associated with politics and power play.
“He was steady to the core, in beliefs and principles, especially on the principles in the Loloata camp that we shared deeply – that is getting the maximum returns on resources that our country has.”
“He was my strongest fighter of corruption in my group of leaders.
“We have truly lost a great warrior of our country.
“He was a zealous defender of our people’s right in the corruption fight, in every level of engagement.
“He was also a fearless defender of our people’s rights, and on a personal note, one of the closest people who guided me often and sometimes argued with me on matters for our country.
“On behalf of Pangu Pati and his colleagues in Parliament, we are truly shocked.
“But God gives and God rests.
“To the people of Goilala and Central, his family and associates, his memory, principles and ideals will guide those of us still here to do the right thing, for his family and people of Goilala, Central and PNG.”
Kairuku-Hiri MP Peter Isoaimo said: “Central has lost a profound leader who had contributed immensely for the people of Goilala he represented in parliament, the province and the country while serving in key ministerial portfolios under the Marape-Basil government.”
Health Minister and Gazelle MP Jelta Wong said: “Your (Samb’s) larger than life personality made you a man of stature, your patriotism stood tall in heated words of debate, and most of all, your love of family and the brotherhood shone far brighter than ever.”
Police Minister and Kundiawa-Gembogl MP William Onglo said: “Countless hours of conversation and your love for your people and this country was evident in the conversations we had, you never let anyone down and when a fellow MP was down, you were there when they needed a friend, your love for your people was evident in the way you spoke about Goilala, my brother, you will be missed.”
Information and Communication Technology Minister and South Bougainville MP Timothy Masiu said: “Samb was humility personified.
“He was also a hard-working colleague and someone who committed and dedicated his time to serving the people of Goilala and the country,” Masiu said.
