Opposition Leader Douglas Tomuriesa said he is disappointed and embarrassed over the way His Holiness Pope Francis was treated by Prime Minister James Marape over the last three-days during the Papal visit, and the lack of courtesy and respect shown by the Prime Minister. He said the Prime Minister continuously declares PNG as a ‘Christian country’ and prides himself on being a religious individual but he was surprised when the Pope was continuously snubbed by the PM over the weekend since the Pope’s arrival on Friday. “The Pope is the head of the Catholic church, the largest Christian church in the world and he is also a head of state. “PNG not only being a Christian country, but a country that prides itself as a ‘friend to all, enemy to none’, the PM should be according the Pope with the highest level of respect,” Tomuriesa said. THE SP Hunters have suffered a setback to the start of their upcoming campaign as co-captain Ila Alu prepares to undergo surgery on a fractured collar bone.
The lock is the most experienced player in camp, having made 38 appearances across four Hostplus Cup (formerly Queensland Intrust Super Cup) seasons so far for the South Pacific Brewery-sponsored side.
Alu left the field in the opening set of the Hunters’ 10-20 loss to hosts Central Queensland Capras in the visitors’ first trial match of the year.
“Ila Alu fractured his collar bone,” Hunters coach Matthew Church told The National on Monday night.
“We won’t know the recovery time until post-surgery, so we will see how it goes.”
Meanwhile, Church said he was disappointed in his side’s performance in Gladstone where his men trailed 0-10 at halftime before a stronger second half saw Solo Wane and Kingstimer Paraia each score a try for the Hunters.
He said the Capras capitalised on the Hunters’ errors to gain the ascendency from the get-go.
“We are disappointed in the team’s performance in relation to our attention to detail,” Church said.
“We gave away possession easily and conceded too many penalties.
“These are things that can easily be corrected with the right focus.”
Despite the result, Church said there were some positive takeaways from the match.
“I am pretty happy with the performances of Sylvester Namo, Dilbert Isaac, Roderick Tai and Samuel Yegip,” the Australian said.
“But overall, (there are) plenty (of areas) to improve on.”
Church said Anthony Worot, Francis Kembis, Emmanuel Waine and Jamie Mavoko, who missed the Capras hit-out, would play in Saturday’s trial match against Brisbane Rugby League A-grade side, West Brisbane Panthers, at Frank Lind Oval (5.30pm kick-off).
He said the coaching team would assess the health of the rest of the squad before they name their team for this weekend’s trial clash against the Brisbane side.
