  Opposition Leader Douglas Tomuriesa said he is disappointed and embarrassed over the way His Holiness Pope Francis was treated by Prime Minister James Marape over the last three-days during the Papal visit, and the lack of courtesy and respect shown by the Prime Minister. He said the Prime Minister continuously declares PNG as a ‘Christian country’ and prides himself on being a religious individual but he was surprised when the Pope was continuously snubbed by the PM over the weekend since the Pope’s arrival on Friday. “The Pope is the head of the Catholic church, the largest Christian church in the world and he is also a head of state. “PNG not only being a Christian country, but a country that prides itself as a ‘friend to all, enemy to none’, the PM should be according the Pope with the highest level of respect,” Tomuriesa said. DPM SAM BASIL PASSES ON AFTER NASTY CAR ACCIDENT

Deputy Prime Minister and Transport and Infrastructure Minister and Bulolo MP, Sam Basil has passed on at around 11pm after a nasty car accident last night.
Preliminary police reports say the vehicle Mr Basil was in was hit by another vehicle, causing the accident that left the Deputy Prime Minister unconscious till he passed on at the Bulolo hospital.
Sources on the ground say a local medical team were already working to revive him as soon as he was brought to Bulolo.
A doctor was also travelling with the Manalos Aviation team to Medivac Mr. Basil to Lae, but the mission was unsuccessful as he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Reports reaching NBC News says that, the Member for Bulolo was on his way up to his electorate to prepare for his nomination, given that the National General Election writs will open on Thursday 12th May, 2022.
Late Mr Basil was said to be travelling in the company of two of his Close Protection Officers and a Media officer when the accident occured, hours before the issue of writs for the National General Elections.
The late Bulolo MP's passing now bring to eight the number of Members of Parliament, who have died in this Parliamentary term alone.
Word from Angau Hospital's Accidents and Emergency is that a police officer is also dead with others seriously injured.
The conditions of late Mr Basil's Protection Officers and Media officer, as well as that of those in the other vehicle involved in the accident is yet to be confirmed at this stage.

Prime Minister, James Marape has this afternoon announced the decision by Petroleum Minister Jimmy Maladina to step aside from his position while a complaint against him is being heard in court in Australia.

Prime Minister Marape said: "I want to inform everyone that Minister Maladina has offered to step aside from his ministerial office as he attends to the complaint as it is being heard in court in Australia. "I thank Minister Maladina for taking responsibility to uphold his name and the integrity of the public office he holds in a professional manner in respecting the judicial process to run its course. "I had my discussion with the Minister, and as a responsible government that respects the Rule of Law, we uphold high standards. Minister Maladina stepping aside is appreciated,” said PM Marape. The Prime Minister urged the public to refrain from spreading speculations as this matter is now before a competent prosecutorial process. “The Police and Courts in Australia will do their job so we await and see the outcome. "I will appoint an acting Minister to carry on the good work Minister Maladina has been doing.” PM Marape said.

  July 9, 2021 Main Stories By MIRIAM ZARRIGA ANOTHER repatriation exercise was carried out on Wednesday in Kimbe, West New Britain, as the provincial government began evicting Sepiks. A total of 200 families, who were plaintiffs in a court case against the provincial government in 2009, were put on a boat in Kimbe. All were from East Sepik and were repatriated to their home province on Wednesday night. They’re scheduled to arrive in Wewak today on MV Momase charted by the WNB government. There were some mixed emotions from the people. Parents and grandparents were happy to return home but the young people – males and females – wept openly. They were sad leaving Kimbe as they said they were born and grew up there and regarded it as home. This second group included many youths. This brought the total repatriated to 297.
