CRONULLA chief executive Dino Mezzatesta believes new signing and one-time Storm centre Will Chambers can form a strong edge combination with Papua New Guinea international Nene Macdonald.
He told The National on Sunday that Newtown Jet Macdonald, who turns 27 next Tuesday, had lacked consistency during training and matches with the Sharks’ New South Wales Cup feeder club.
But Mezzatesta said the former Rooster, Dragon and Cowboy was in contention for another National Rugby League (NRL) call-up, given Cronulla’s bad run of injuries and form slump.
Cronulla have now gone four games without a victory, having last won in round four against North Queensland at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium in Sydney at the beginning of last month.
But interim coach Josh Hannay, who has had a baptism of fire since replacing John Morris in round six, hasn’t made wholesale changes despite the Sharks winning just two of their opening eight matches.
Biding his time in the reserve grade, Macdonald showed good signs when he played alongside former Australian and Queensland Origin back Chambers in the Jets’ 30-14 win over Mounties last month.
“Chambers is more a centre than a winger and Nene is more a winger,” Mezzatesta said.
“Chambers and Nene formed a strong combination in their only game together for the Jets a fortnight ago.
“With the Sharks suffering an injury crisis, our depth has been tested and Nene is getting closer to a call-up to our NRL team.”
Macdonald, who has so far scored 35 tries and is just two matches shy of his 100th NRL appearance, is yet to add to his two games from 2020 following his mid-season signing as injury cover last year.
