Opposition Leader Douglas Tomuriesa said he is disappointed and embarrassed over the way His Holiness Pope Francis was treated by Prime Minister James Marape over the last three-days during the Papal visit, and the lack of courtesy and respect shown by the Prime Minister. He said the Prime Minister continuously declares PNG as a ‘Christian country’ and prides himself on being a religious individual but he was surprised when the Pope was continuously snubbed by the PM over the weekend since the Pope’s arrival on Friday. “The Pope is the head of the Catholic church, the largest Christian church in the world and he is also a head of state. “PNG not only being a Christian country, but a country that prides itself as a ‘friend to all, enemy to none’, the PM should be according the Pope with the highest level of respect,” Tomuriesa said. THE 21-year-old man allegedly beaten up by policemen has come out of a coma, as more charges are expected to be laid against three cops already detained.
Samuel’s father Senior Constable Benjamin Naraboi said his son Samuel had come out of a coma but not talking much.
“He doesn’t say much but that is what his mother and I expect.
“We are pleased that he is awake and we are not rushing him to speak,” he said.
He thanked family members and friends who prayed for Samuel’s recovery.
Samuel and a friend were allegedly assaulted at Waigani on Feb 27 after attempting to buy betel-nut from a vendor who swore at them.
The three policemen are already facing a count each of attempted murder and of the deprivation of liberty.
Police Commissioner David Manning said: “The second round of interviews with the second victim of the attack by a police unit on Samuel Naraboi, 21, and his 21-year-old friend will commence soon.
“Samuel’s friend sustained a broken jaw and would be assisting police investigators from the Internal Investigation Unit (IIU) with a crime scene reconstruction.
“I want this investigation to be completed (fully) and this case is what the constabulary will be expecting in 2022.
“We do not need rogue police officers who use the uniform and firearm they carry to intimidate and abuse their position of power over the people.
“We expect investigators to leave no stone unturned.”
Chief Superintendent Emil Alpha of the police internal investigation unit said the policeman believed to have assaulted the two friends prior to the arrival of the taskforce unit was being sought.
“We are working to identify the officer and he will be picked up soon,” he said.
