DRIVER INVOLVED IN ACCIDENT WITH LATE DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER TO BE CHARGED

Police Commissioner, David Manning said the driver of the other vehicle involved in the tragic accident that claimed the lives of Deputy Prime Minister Sam Basil and his bodyguard, is expected to be charged soon.
In a statement yesterday, Mr. Manning said police investigators are satisfied with the evidence on hand to lay charges on the driver.
Police have released the identity of the driver as 37-year old Mathew Barnabas from Ambai village, Simbai, in Madang Province.
Police say he is a coffee buyer who is married to a local woman from Mumeng, Bulolo District.
Mr. Manning said he is likely to be charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing the deaths of Mr. Basil and First Constable Neil Maino, and dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm to the other two passengers.
He said investigations pointed to allegations of a dangerous combination of speed and driving under the influence of liquor, allegedly by Barnabas, as evident from the bottles of alcohol recovered from his vehicle.
