Opposition Leader Douglas Tomuriesa said he is disappointed and embarrassed over the way His Holiness Pope Francis was treated by Prime Minister James Marape over the last three-days during the Papal visit, and the lack of courtesy and respect shown by the Prime Minister. He said the Prime Minister continuously declares PNG as a ‘Christian country’ and prides himself on being a religious individual but he was surprised when the Pope was continuously snubbed by the PM over the weekend since the Pope’s arrival on Friday. “The Pope is the head of the Catholic church, the largest Christian church in the world and he is also a head of state. “PNG not only being a Christian country, but a country that prides itself as a ‘friend to all, enemy to none’, the PM should be according the Pope with the highest level of respect,” Tomuriesa said. The Opposition Leader pointed out that on Friday, the Prime Minister did not welcome the Pope at the airport, a tradition he had accorded to many othe...

Governor Sasindran Muthuvel condolences

I cannot believe my brother and friend is gone. Hon. Sam Basil was truly one of a kind. A vibrant leader that I personally looked up to whenever I needed guidance. He was my mentor when I first entered parliament in 2012 and he was the reason I gained confidence to fire questions like he did.

Looking back at his career, it was nothing short of remarkable. In such a small period of time he has been in the Opposition, to Party Leader, to Minister of State and finally reaching the second highest office of DPM.
It was his charisma that revived the PANGU Party and put it back on track to be the party it is today. And it’s even more unprecedented that in just less than 3 years, he managed to establish the United Labour Party to be a major contender in our country’s political scene. He was no doubt a major contender to be the next Prime Minister, and us in Parliament had high hopes for his future.
He was the most consistent MP in Morobe, and it showed as Bulolo trusted him enough to send him to Parliament 3 times and maybe the fourth this year. When you think of Morobe Prime Minister material, the first you think of is Sam.
I admired his down to leadership that he displayed. Traveling the length and breadth of his province, sitting with his people over the fire in the mountains and always making time for those who mattered to him.
I truly can’t believe this. Just yesterday we were discussing the election and his hopes for his party.
Although he had no degree, he showed us that as long as you had the right mindset to lead, anything is possible. He was a street smart leader and was a fast learner. If you gave him time to learn a new subject, he’ll come back talking like an expert.
Sam, I truly wish that you rest in everlasting peace and trust that God grant you grace now that you rest.
On behalf of the people of West New Britain, we join our brothers and sisters of Morobe to pay respect to this great leader. I also pass my sympathies to the ULP family and supporters.
On behalf of my family, I most importantly give may deepest condolences to his family especially his children who didn’t have the opportunity to say goodbye.
God bless all
